Transcend Information, Inc. announced today its latest Flash memory-based 32GB solid state drive compatible with ExpressCard/34 slot, which is commonly used in newer notebook computers.
“Transcend?’s ExpressCard/34 SSD is a smaller and faster plug-in module solution that supports USB 2.0 and PCI Express Applications, and perfectly matches mobile and desktop systems. The ExpressCard/34 SSD is compatible with Windows Vista and supports ReadyBoost function. Moreover, Transcend?’s ExpressCard/34 SSD comes bundled with a portable USB adapter, which makes it work as a regular USB flash drive,” the company’s press release says.
The flash memory products maker has already launched the 2GB, 4GB, 8GB and 16GB ExpressCard solid state drives in April.
The 32GB SSD for ExpressCard slot costs $509, while the 16GB version costs $281 at Transcend’s website. The same device with 8GB capacity is priced at $153.

Toshiba has refreshed its 17-inch Satellite P205 desktop replacement PC series with a Satellite P205-S6347 model featuring the latest Intel “Santa Rosa” Centrino Duo technology and a HD DVD drive. The PC maker has also added the customizable “Santa Rosa” notebooks to the P205 lineup.
Priced at $1,449, the Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347 comes with Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 processor (1.66GHz, 2MB L2, 667MHz FSB) and Intel GM965 chipset featuring Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, which manages 17″ widescreen display with 1440×900 resolution. The notebook is configured with 2GB of DDR2 system memory, expandable up to 4GB, and with 200GB SATA hard disk drive at 4200rpm.
Equipped with an HD DVD-ROM, the P205-S6347 gives users the option of watching high-definition content at a resolution of 720p on notebook’s display. Its HD DVD optical drive also enables the standard CD and DVD writing. In terms of sound, the Satellite P205-S6347 is equipped with Dolby Sound Room technology and Harman/Kardon speakers. Unlike the Satellite X205 gaming notebook, the P205-S6347 has no HDMI output for high-definition multimedia playback on external HDTVs and monitors.
Regarding communications, this desktop replacement has Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN (802.11a/g/n) wireless, a modem, Ethernet LAN, and web camera and microphone built into LCD bezel.
Toshiba Satellite P205-S6347 has an ExpressCard slot, four USB ports, a 5-in-1 media card reader, and a Firewire. For video output, there are S-Video and VGA ports, while for improved security there is a fingerprint reader.
This notebook starts at 8.79 pounds and features a numeric pad, besides a standard keyboard. It ships with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled.

Toshiba has announced today Satellite U305 13.3-inch notebook PC series aimed at students and small business owners. The U305 is based on the latest Intel “Santa Rosa” or the older “Napa” platform, depending on model.
The U305’s 13.3-inch widescreen display provides 1280 x 800 screen resolution. These laptops, which weigh starting at 4.6 pounds, come with DVD burner and integrated 1.3 megapixel web camera. All of U305 notebooks support up to 4GB of system memory.
The Satellite U305-S5127 model features “Santa Rosa’s” Intel GM965 chipset with Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 and comes with Core 2 Duo T7100 processor at 1.8GHz. It is configured with 2GB of DDR2 memory, a 200GB SATA hard drive at 4200rpm and 1GB Intel Turbo Memory. The U305-S5127 costs $1,399.
Toshiba Satellite U305-S5097 ($899) and U305-S5107 ($1,149) are built on “Napa’s” Intel 943GML/943GM chipsets with the integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950. These systems come with Pentium dual-core T2130 1.83MHz and Intel Core 2 Duo T5300 1.73GHz processors respectively. The U305-S5097 has 1GB of DDR2 memory, while the U305-S5107 includes 2GB DDR2 SDRAM. Both laptops have a 160GB SATA hard drive at 5400rpm.
Regarding communications, U305-S5127 and U305-S5107 support 802.11a/g/draft n wireless standards and have integrated Bluetooth modules. The lower-end U305-S5097 supports 802.11b/g only. All of them have Ethernet LAN and 56K modem connections.
Toshiba Satellite U305 notebooks have ExpressCard slots, three USB ports, 5-in-1 media card reader, Firewire and VGA output. For enhanced security, there is a fingerprint reader in each model.
These laptops ship with Windows Vista operating systems and are available at retail and ToshibaDirect.com.
The computer maker also offers the configurable “Napa”-based Satellite U300-ST3091 with starting price of $854.

High Tech Computer Corp. develops HTC X9500 ultra-mobile PC (UMPC), a device that will be able run both Windows Vista and Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating systems, BrightHand reports.
HTC X9500, codenamed Shangri-La, will have 64MB of RAM and 128MB of ROM to run Windows Mobile, plus it will include a 1GB of RAM and a 30GB or 40GB hard drive for Windows Vista reportedly. The X9500 will apparently feature Intel’s Dothan 800 MHz processor.
This handheld/UMPC combination will have a 7-inch 800-by-480-pixel touchscreen display and a sliding QWERTY keyboard. When the screen is slid aside to expose the keyboard, it will flip up at an angle.
HTC’s Shangri-La will include a GSM phone functionality with GPRS and EDGE. It will also support 3G, wireless 802.11b/g and Bluetooth connectivity. For video conferencing there will be a built in web camera.
According to BrgihtHand, the X9500 will have at least one USB port, an external monitor output, a miniSD slot, a GPS receiver, a fingerprint reader, and a 2800 mAh battery.
Currently, there is no information on Shangri-La’s pricing and availability. Earlier this year, the company showcased the similar UMPC, called HTC Shift, which is based on Intel’s Ultra Mobile Platform 2007.

LG Electronics has filed a lawsuit against Taiwan’s Quanta Computer, the world’s largest contract manufacturer of notebook PCs, over the infringement of four patents related to DVD technology, the company said today. The lawsuit was filed in US District Court, Western District of Wisconsin on July 3, LG published.
LG alleged that Quanta has been using the infringing technology to produce notebooks that have been supplied to US computer vendors. Quanta’s customers are vendors such as HP, Dell, and others.
The South Korean LG wants Quanta to stop using LG’s DVD technology, as well as cash compensation.
Quanta Computer declined to immediately comment on the lawsuit.

UnwiredView has revealed the details and renderings of the upcoming HTC Omni laptop-like communicator, which should be released in October this year.
According to HTC’s roadmap, the Omni device will feature Windows Mobile 6.0 operating system, a 4-inch 800-by-480 pixel display and an additional subdisplay, as well as a full QUERTY keyboard. HTC Omni will have 256 ROM, 1280 RAM, and a microSD memory card slot.
Regarding connectivity, the upcoming communicator will sport UMTS/HSDPA, Wi-Fi b/g, and GPS/A-GPS (Assisted GPS) capabilities.
It will also feature a Bluetooth, an USB port, and TV and VGA outputs.
Currently there is no information on HTC Omni’s pricing.

Laptop Magazine, CNet, AnandTech and PC World have reviewed recently 15.4-inch HP Pavilion dv6500t mainstream notebook, aimed at multimedia users. In addition, ReviewPub has published a review of the Pavilion dv6500t Special Edition laptop.
According to Laptop Magazine, Intel’s “Santa Rosa” platform and the latest Core 2 Duo processor in the dv6500t provide good performance and very good battery life. The reviewed model had the new integrated Intel GMA X3100 graphics, which is claimed to delivered better results on 3DMark03 tests than the previous dv6000t with integrated GMA 950 GPU. However, the X3100 is not powerful enough to handle serious 3D gaming, the Magazine says.
On the other side, CNet has tested HP Pavilion dv6500t with the dedicated nVidia GeForce 8400M GS 128MB graphics, providing “some decent gaming scores” at lower resolutions. This model also has an HDMI output, which is a plus. The website says the main drawback of the dv6500t with dedicated graphics is a disappointing battery life of one hour and 48 minutes on DVD battery drain test.
In its in-depth review, AnandTech paid attention to dv6500t’s display, said to be “pretty average at best” due to older LCD technology. The display is not particularly bright, viewing angles are limited, and colors seemed a bit off, according to AnandTech. The website compares this notebook to a basic minivan: “It won’t turn any heads and you won’t set any land speed records, but it will get you where you need to go with a minimum of hassle and you might still have some lunch money left over”.
PC World says the beautifully crafted dv6500t consumer notebook, made for showing off, is capable of serious work as well. It’s a strong performer, yet fairly light (6.2 pounds) and easily totable reportedly. PC World’s Carla Thornton also noticed that HP downgraded the dv6000t’s 1.3-megapixel web camera to 0.3 megapixels on the dv6500t.
The HP dv6500t Special Edition reviewed by ReviewPub, uses the the same hardware components as HP dv6500t laptop, but it has white chassis.
“In my opinion both dv6500t notebooks are pleasantly designed, but the the Special Edition with its eye-catching white looks really does look a little more, well, special,” ReviewPub says.

OCZ has launched 2GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM notebook-use memory modules, featuring 800MHz speed.
The OCZ PC2-6400 DDR2 SODIMM memory will be available in 2GB modules and 4GB (2×2GB) kits, both rated to run 5-5-5 timings. The manufacturer offers lifetime warranty for this memory, but there is no information on pricing and availability.
Although the latest notebooks built on the new Intel “Santa Rosa” mobile platform support 800MHz memory speed, PC vendors offer these laptops with 667MHz modules.
Last year, Kingston and Transcend also announced 800MHz SODIMMs. The only 800MHz notebook memory modules that we have found at online retailers are Kingston’s ValueRAM 1GB KVR800D2S5/1G and 512MB KVR800D2S5/512. PC Mall offers these products for $41.99 and $79.99 respectively.

Dell Precision M4300, the new notebook in company’s mobile workstation lineup, has been unveiled today. The 15.4-inch M4300 features Intel “Santa Rosa” notebook PC platform and NVIDIA’s Quadro FX graphics solution.
The Precision M4300, a successor of the Precision M65 model, is offered with Core 2 Duo T7100, T7300, T7500, and T7700 processor and a discrete Quadro FX 360M 256MB video card designed for graphically-demanding applications like 3D modeling and video-editing. This graphics card manages the 15.4″ widescreen display, which is offered in three versions: WUXGA UltraSharp (200 nits) with 1920×1200 resolution, WSXGA+ UltraSharp TrueLife (200 nits) with 1680×1050, or WXGA (220 nits) with 1280×800 resolution.
The notebook supports up to 4GB of DDR2 memory. However, for utilization of more than 3GB of RAM, a 64-bit operating system is a must. The Precision M4300 comes with up to 160GB SATA hard drive at 7200rpm or with up to 32GB solid state drive. This system has module bay, which can be populated with an optical drive, a secondary HDD, a secondary battery, or left empty. The PC maker also offers the 1GB Intel Turbo Memory option with this laptop.
Regarding connectivity, Dell Precision M4300, has a wireless LAN with optional support for the 802.11n draft WiFi standard, a Gigabit Ethernet, a 56k modem, and provides a variety of EVDO and HSDPA broadband wireless choices. Additionally, it has an optional Bluetooth.
The M4300 mobile workstation has both PC Card and ExpressCard slots, as well as three standard USB ports, a powered USB port for D/Bay external modular bay, a Firewire, VGA and S-Video outputs, a Serial port, and a docking connector.
For enhanced security, the laptop features integrated Smart Card reader, Trusted Platform Module 1.2 and optional fingerprint reader. There is also Wave Embassy Trust Suite security software.
Dell’s new Precision notebook starts at $2,034 and comes with Windows Vista or Windows XP Professional operating systems, both in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
The product pages do not provide the information on M4300’s weight. The previous M65 model starts at 6.2 lbs.

Dell has released the new Intel-based Dell Inspiron 1520 and AMD-powered Inspiron 1521 15.4-inch consumer laptops.
Dell Inspiron 1520 is built on Intel ?“Santa Rosa?” notebook platform and is offered with Core 2 Duo T5250, T5450, T7100, T7300, and T7500 processors. These CPUs have clock speeds ranging from 1.5GHz to 2.2GHz and 800MHz front side bus. The 1520 models with GM965 chipset feature the integrated Intel X3100 graphics, while those based on PM965 chipset come with dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS 128MB or NVIDIA GeForce 8600M WP 256MB card.
The Inspiron 1521 is based on AMD ATI M690T chipset paired with one of the dual core AMD Turion 64 X2 processors, providing speeds from 1.8GHz to 2.2GHz. Later, there will be also an option of dual core AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU at 1.7GHz reportedly. The Dell 1521 has the integrated ATI Mobility Radeon X1270 video solution.
According to official product pages, 1520 and 1521 notebooks have 15.4-inch widescreen displays and enable choice of 1280?—800 or 1440?—900 screen resolutions. These laptops support SATA hard drives (up to 160GB offered) and initially come with up to 4GB of system memory, while the 8GB memory and hybrid hard drive options will be available later, according to earlier reports. The notebooks ship with DVD burners. When configured with a dedicated graphics card, Dell Inspiron 1520 models have a Blu-Ray optical drive option.
