AMD ?Puma? Notebooks Coming in Mid-2008
AMD today officially unveiled more details of its next-generation notebook computer platform, codenamed “Puma”, which features the “Griffin” processor and “RS780″ mobile chipset. The platform will provide longer battery life, graphics and video processing enhancements, and improvement in overall system performance, the chip maker announced at a press conference in Tokyo, Japan.
Laptops based on the AMD’s “Puma” platform are expected to be available in the mid-2008 timeframe.
The innovations in “Griffin” processor include power optimized HyperTransport and memory controllers integrated in the processor silicon that operate on a separate power plane as the processor cores. This enables the cores to go into reduced power states. For further battery life savings, the separate voltage planes also enable each CPU core to operate at independent frequency and voltage.
The HyperTransport 3.0 is claimed to provide a more than tripling of peak I/O bandwidth, plus new power features including dynamic scaling of link widths.
AMD “RS780″ laptop chipset will deliver “a rich visual experience and increased performance,” according to AMD.
The “RS780″ features PCI Express Generation 2 and the HyperTransport 3.0, as well as DirectX 10 graphics processing, an energy efficient high-definition multimedia support with the Unified Video Decoder, an integrated multi-monitor support with DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort, and a native southbridge support for NAND flash with HyperFlash.
The “RS780″ additionally includes PowerXpress technology for dynamic switching between integrated and discrete graphics to extend battery life.
“The ‘Puma’ platform is based upon an open platform strategy. In addition to the ‘Griffin’ microprocessor and ‘RS780′ chipset, the ‘Puma’ platform includes ATI Radeon graphics, NVIDIA chipset and graphics technologies, and industry-leading wireless technologies,” AMD says.
