Fujitsu FMV-U8240 - The Company?s First UMPC

Fujitsu  FMV-U8240 UMPCFujitsu today announced the addition of the U Series of ultra-mobile PCs (UMPCs) to its FMV-LIFEBOOK line of laptops. The introduced FMV-U8240 model for the Japanese market is the Company’s first UMPC device.

“Intended for business users, the U Series is the world’s smallest tablet-convertible UMPC, weighing only 580g and with a thickness of only 26.5mm,” Fujitsu says, adding that this mobile computer has a battery life of up to eight hours.

Fujitsu  FMV-U8240Fujitsu FMV-U8240 UMPC is based on the latest Intel Ultra Mobile Platform 2007, and comes with Intel’s new “Stealey” A110 processor at 800MHz clock speed. It will be offered with 512MB or 1GB of main memory and with 20GB hard drive. The device has 5.6-inch widescreen display (1024×600 resolution) and touchscreen capability, along with a keyboard entry capability. With a special port replicator it supports an external keyboard and display. The FMV-U8240 also provides “advanced communications and security features”. According to previous reports, the new UMPC has two integrated cameras and a Secure Digital card slot.

The FMV-U8240 will be available with either Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Business.

Its price in Japan will start at JPY 144,000, which is approximately $1,196. The FMV-U8240 will become available during June. Currently, there is no information on availability of the Fujitsu’s UMPC in the United States.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC and Ultra-Portable Coming in June

Lenovo ThinkPad X60 Tablet PCLenovo prepares the release of ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC and ThinkPad X61 ultra-portable notebook, both expected to become available in June, according to documents on IBM website. The 12.1-inch screen X61 series tablets and small laptops are based on Intel Centrino Duo “Santa Rosa” platform.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61 mobile computers are built upon Intel GM965 Express Chipset with integrated Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100, and are offered with up to 2GB of DDR2 system memory (expandable to 4GB) and up to 160GB hard drives.

The X61 Tablet PC “is a thin and light tablet with a 12.1-inch XGA TFT with 1024×768 resolution, a 12.1-inch TouchScreen XGA TFT with 1024×768 resolution, or a 12.1-inch SXGA+ TFT with 1400×1050 resolution”. It is powered by Intel Core 2 Duo L7300 or L7500 low-voltage processor at 1.4GHz and 1.6GHz, respectively.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61 ultra-portable has a 12.1-inch XGA display with 1024×768 resolution and the new Intel Core 2 Duo T7300 CPU at 2GHz. For improved system responsiveness, this notebook features an optional 1GB of Intel Turbo Memory, which enables the application workloads to be written and read from a system cache instead of the hard drive.

Regarding networking, both models feature wireless connectivity, including wireless N (802.11n draft) standard in select configurations, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth and a data/fax modem. The X61 ultra-portable also has an optional wireless broadband access.

Each ThinkPad X61 tablet and laptop has three USB ports, PC Card slot, Secure Digital card slot, Firewire, and VGA output.

The new Lenovo’s “Santa Rosa” based X61 ThinkPads come with 32-bit or 64-bit Windows Vista or with Windows XP Home, Professional, or Tablet Edition (for tablet model). The X61 ultra-portable also has a Microsoft Windows 2000 option. For use of 4GB of system memory, users must purchase these PCs with 64-bit operating system, since the 32-bit versions supports up to 3GB.

Lenovo ThinkPad X61 Tablet PC’s and laptop’s weigh starts 3.77 lbs and 3.11 lbs, respectively.

Currently, there is no information on pricing.
